San Fernando Mission

In September 1797 the seventeenth mission to be built in California was established by father Lausen, successor to father Junipero Serra. The mission, San Fernando Rey de España was named after Saint Ferdinand III, King of Spain in the 1200’s. This mission was built with the main goal of closing the gaps in El Camino Real but more specifically to relieve the journey between San Gabriel and San Buenaventura. Its popularity was so great that the length of the mission was continually extended to the point that the housing wing became known as the Long Corridor. It is designated as State Landmark 157.

The mission is located in the center of a triangle formed by the 5, 405 and 118 freeways
