West Los Angeles Projects

In years past the Los Angeles River occasionally changed its course and drained to Santa Monica Bay via what is now Ballona Creek, instead draining down to San Pedro Bay at Long Beach as it currently does. When the Army Corps channelized the river in the 1930's they fixed the river's course on its Long Beach path. Ballona Creek is now the major drainage for most of West Los Angeles. Where Ballona meets the ocean was historically a large wetlands, some of which is still remnant and targeted for restoration.

There is a bikeway along the length of Ballona Creek, and numerous creative projects have been undertaken in recent years. The entire creek is now being studied from a watershed perspective by the Ballona Creek Task Force.
