South Bay Projects
South of the city of Los Angeles will be the most challenging part of the river to restore. Over the past century much of our industrial land use has been sited along the river here, and densely populated communities have grown up around it. For instance, the city of Maywood is the most densely populated and park-poor city in the region. The Army Corps of Engineers recently raised the concrete levees on the river south of the Rio Hondo confluence in South Gate. Compton Creek, which joins the river just north of the 405 freeway, has a mile of habitat-supporting soft bottom just upstream of the confluence. The river's estuary in Long Beach also has a natural bottom for the last three miles before emptying into San Pedro Bay.
