Central Los Angeles Projects

los feliz equestrian bridge

This area of the river is also known as the Glendale Narrows. All of the water from the San Fernando Valley funnels out through this narrow passage between the hills. The river here has a natural bottom for seven miles until it is crossed by the 110 freeway, just upstream of where it is joined by the Arroyo Seco. This area is where the first recorded words were written about Los Angeles in 1769. Twelve years later the pueblo was founded nearby, largely because of the abundant year-round river flow.

Many of the first LA River Greenway projects completed were undertaken in this area because this soft-bottom section of the river is one of the few places where people can experience its natural habitat and relate to the river as a river.
