Bikeways

There are numerous bikeways along our rivers and creeks. The San Gabriel River bikeway extends nearly the entire length of the river from Duarte to Long Beach and the City of Azusa has plans to extend it even further upstream. It passes through the Santa Fe and Whittier Narrows Dam Recreation areas, El Dorado Park and several small community parks along the way. The LARIO Trail runs along the Rio Hondo channel and continues south along the LA River to Long Beach.

The Ballona Creek’s bike path runs about 8 miles from east Culver City to Marina del Rey, then extends down the coast to Redondo Beach. The Arroyo Seco bikeway is currently about 3 miles long and runs between Pasadena Avenue and the east end of Ernest Debs Park. There are plans to extend it upstream to Devils Gate Dam and downstream to connect to the LA River bikeway. There’s a 9 mile bikeloop around Sepulveda Basin, which passes along the most natural stretch of the LA River.

The LA River Bikeway will eventually run 52 miles from Canoga Park to Long Beach. It now extends from Victory Blvd (at the 134 fwy) to Fletcher Drive in Elysian Valley. The stretch includes the Alex Baum Bicycle Bridge over Los Feliz Blvd. completed in 2002. An extension from Fletcher to Riverside and the Arroyo Seco bikeway is in development. With funding from the California Coastal Conservancy, North East Trees & the Los Angeles County Bike Coalition undertook a study exploring alternatives to close the 7-mile bikeway gap between the Arroyo Seco and Vernon. The bikeway picks up again in Vernon along the west bank of the LA River for a 4 mile stretch to Southgate. In Southgate, the bikeway becomes part of the Lario Trail system and runs along the river’s east bank downstream to Long Beach.
